IRELAND’S EYE
BETDAQ sponsor the full card on the days only all weather card and on a relatively busy day there are also flat cards at Ffos Las and Bath. Roscommon provides the action in Ireland today where an interesting mixed card looks to have a couple of interesting long priced fancies. A locally trained bottom weight whose only career success came at this fixture can register his first win over fences while a former point winner can land an open looking novice chase for the Arthur Moore yard on his seasonal reappearance.
Yesterday yielded another few winners for the column with our first choice High Magic (4-3/1) getting the nod from the judges in a Clonmel youngsters maiden hurdle at the expense of our saver Big Game Hunter (6/5). However we had to rely on two savers to deliver our other winners with Chrysanthemum (7/2) maintaining his hundred per cent record in a Group 3 event at the Curragh in a race where our selection Bible Belt (11/2-5/1) finished a close third. Our nap Swiftmarc (14-12/1) was not disgraced in finishing third in the Cesarewitch while saver Gaelic Grounds (12/1) managed to land a handicap chase at Clonmel.
Though the Gigginstown owned Sorceror won his sole point two years ago the lightly raced six year old has looked to be suited by the minimum distance in the interim and the son of Sleeping Car can put his experience to good use by landing the Grade 3 novice chase at Roscommon this afternoon at 4-35. Winner of a 2m Punchestown maiden hurdle from the subsequent scorer Acapulco following a promising debut in this sphere behind Realt Dubh he has run four decent races over fences to date behind such useful sorts as Captain Cee Bee, River Liane and Shakervilz (including a Grade 2). Paddy Floods mount usually makes the running and though his point win was achieved on good ground he seems suited by some ‘cut’ and as the sort who usually runs well when fresh he can collect here from the penalised dual chase winner Beau Michael who was not totally disgraced in taking fourth behind the progressive Kilmurry at Galway last time on unsuitably faster ground.
Val O’Briens Ballygill Gale has only collected once during his career but the 6yo win came over hurdles in a 3m hc hurdle over a year ago and it could pay to side with the bottom weight in the 2m 5f hc chase (soft) at Roscommon this evening (5-05). Though he has had seven attempts over the major obstacles he has mainly raced on better ground but he has shown on his most recent starts which included a fair fifth over CD almost two months ago on good ground and a reasonably promising third over a furlong further at Ballinrobe last time that his turn may be coming. Though he is a pound out of the handicap he has the 3lbs claims of Phillip Enright to draw upon and in receipt of plenty of weight from his rivals here – none of whom boast a compelling profile here – he should get the better of seasonal debutant and dual chase winner Old Si who has never been the most consistent but Dessie Hughes 7yo is suited by ground and trip.
It could be argued that Regal D’Estruval stole a 2m maiden hurdle on fast ground at Roscommon almost three months ago with a bold front running performance but the five year old has since run well in better company and he could make it a double by landing the novice hurdle this evening at 5-35 over CD. In the meanwhile the French bred has seen the backside of the progressive Ballyadam Brook on two occasions at Galway (finishing 3rd) and on most recent at Listowel with the form boosted by yesterdays easy winner Cass Bligh who has finished three placings and some four lengths ahead of the selection. Favourite Dark Prospect and Tom Taaffes good Kilbeggan scorer Steeltown will have their supporters with the latter looking the more interesting of the pair dropped back in trip. However the main danger may come from Lizzie Bennett who was a comfortable winner of a Clonmel 2m maiden hurdle before running well in taking second to an improving mare in a mares novice over two miles and three at Kilbeggan. Willie McCreerys five year old has since finished a good runner up in a Listowel 12f flat handicap and Barry Cashs mount looks open to further progression.
3-10 KEMPTON – BET MULTIPLES – BETDAQ 1m 4f hc
The Moore runner Green Wadi only success has come on the grass in a Bath contest over the distance over a year ago but the 5yo has been showing promise on the all weather and a reproduction of his latest staying on second placing over CD gives him a leading chance here but a chance is taken on the Beckett trained 3yo CAST OF STARS towards the bottom of the handicap in the first time visor.
