IRELAND’S EYE

Though Cork have had to abandon their chases for the second day running the Southern fixture does boast a decent jumping card today with a bumper to complete the days fare. Plumpton look set to get National Hunt racing back in Britain today after the abandonment of Huntingdon yesterday with champion jockey Tony McCoy just one of the top jockeys on show. Wolverhampton on the all weather completes a relatively busy Monday. Dessie Hughes can land a Cork mares novice hurdle in Ireland today with a four year old while at Plumpton Richard Johnson can score on a dual course winner for his father in law Noel Chance.

It was an almost perfect 3 from 3 yesterday with pride of place going to runaway winner Mossey Joe (12/1) in the feature Graded hurdle at Cork with the former pointer/hunter chaser finishing well clear of our saver Askanna (10/3 back in third). In addition savers Profit Margin (13/2-9/2) landed a division of a maiden hurdle for Oliver McKiernan while in the finale the bumper another saver Byerley Bear (5-9/2) just edged out another of our savers Metro Star (4/1) in the bumper.

Colin Bowe suffered disappointment yesterday when his Askanna could only finish a modest third in the Cork feature and the Wexford handler may suffer the same fate today at the same venue when his useful Our Victoria may come up short in the 2m mares novice hurdle at 12-45. The daughter of Old Vic – a dual point scorer has done us a couple of favours of late by landing a bumper and maiden hurdle at decent odds but the penalised 5yo might just be undone by the minimum trip here having scored over 2m 2f at Punchestown (bumper) and over 2m 4f over flights at Clonmel. She did fail by a length and a half to the previously exasperating Start Me Up at Clonmel last time over two miles and four and she looks somewhat vulnerable here. The on that can land the prize is Dessie Hughes 4yo Quiet Thought who made a decent and successful hurdles debut when landing strong favouritism in good fashion at Thurles less than three weeks ago in admittedly a grief strewn two mile mares maiden. The Bob Back filly had shown decent form in bumpers on varying grounds with a couple of placings and she was not disgraced on her sole start here on her debut in a soft/heavy contest some nine months ago. With Bryan Cooper taking off 5lbs she can get the better of the consistent Askanna over a trip and ground which looks to suit.

Though Brackloon High has yet to race beyond a trip in excess 2m 4f the son of Bob Back showed last time at Lingfield that he is crying out for a step up in distance and Noel Chances 5yo can record his second hurdles success by landing the 2m 5f novice hurdle at Plumpton today at 1-05. Twice a winner from as many visits to the track in a 2m 2f bumper and maiden hurdle over the minimum trip on varying grounds Richard Johnsons mount can make amends for his defeat at short odds last time where he got outpaced when losing ouy by just over a length behind Recession Proof on heavy ground. With ground and trip to suit he can land this quite competitive affair which features two unbeaten runners in Skint (Nicky Henderson) and former Irish pointer On Trend and it could be the latter from the Nick Gifford yard who could pose the biggest danger on the back of a smooth success at Lingfield over 2m 4f on good to soft in a novice hurdle some 5 weeks ago.

1-15 CORK – 2m 3f maiden hurdle

Peter Faheys SHOP DJ sprung a 25/1 surprise when romping away with a bumper over this trip here earlier this year on testing ground and the subsequent dual bumper winner looks set to open her hurdles account here on her third start in this sphere. The daughter of Dushyantor has run well in defeat in a decent maiden and Grade 3 hurdle on latest and this race can supply the ex point winner with her first hurdles success. However there are a couple at bigger prices who could spring a surprise and they include Jim Dreapers Ad Man and former point winner Saved By John.

1-35 PLUMPTON – 2m 1f novice chase

Nick Giffords TULLAMORE DEW recorded a wide margin and snug success when taking a 2m 5f novice hurdle here over 2 years ago on faster ground and though this trip may be somewhat on the short side for the Pistolet Bleu 8yo and on hurdles rating is held by Medermit he can add to his fine all the way success on chase debut at Fontwell a month ago against admittedly modest opposition.

Horse Betting Tips: IRELAND’S EYE on Sunday

IrelandsEye_Logo_Small170Sunday 12 December

IRELAND’S EYE

The chases have been deferred till Monday on the Cork card but nevertheless the Southern fixture still boasts a fine card headed by the Grade 3 stayers novice hurdle. After the excitement of Cheltenham in the last couple of days National Hunt fans have got a taste for top class jumping action and today transferred Peterborough chase meeting should give us more top notch action if it passes a late inspection. Southwell on the AW completes the racing action on a pretty busy Sunday. We will concentrate mainly on Cork today and Paul Nolan can give us a winner in a division of a maiden hurdle with a hurdles debutant while an ex pointer/hunter chase gets the vote to beat a couple of talented mares in the feature Graded hurdle.

Cheltenham yielded three winners for the EYE yesterday with pride of place going to the Richard Johnson ridden Menorah (9/4-7/4) in a top notch novice hurdle where the 5yo gave a highly impressive performance to lower the colours of our saver – the unbeaten Cue Card (2-15/8). Time For Rupert (evens-10/11) kept his unbeaten record in the novice chase while earlier in the day saver Woolcombe Folly (9/2-4/1) took a handicap chase off top weight with our main selection Fiendish Flame (7-6/1) back in third.

Feature event on the Cork card is the Grade 3 novice hurdle at 12-50. This 3m event will see the two mares in the line up Askanna and Araucaria head the market with the former looking the most likely to collect the main prize here for the Colin Bowe yard. A daughter of Old Vic the five year old has landed two bumpers and three hurdles up to 2m 6f but the dual point winner has only met defeat on jus one occasion – when finishing runner up to the older and more experienced hurdler/chaser L’Ami and she looked good when seeing off more fancied rivals at Punchestown last time. However though her claims are strong here in a race where ground/trip will suit we will side against her on this occasion and the one that could spring a minor surprise is the Willie Austin trained Mossey Joe. A lightly raced 7yo the Moscow Society gelding has shown some fine form ‘between the flags’ winning in clear cut and impressive fashion at Lisronagh (soft/heavy) and Stradbally (good) on his belated career starts earlier this year before ‘repeating the dose’ on his sole hunter chase start at Tipperary over seven months ago. This test on a flat course could play to the strengths of this unexposed type and Andre Leigh can guide him to success over the ‘girls’ here with Askanna getting the vote over Auracaria for the runner up prize.

With the chases on the Cork card being deferred till tomorrow the 2m maiden hurdle has been divided and the second part at 1-50 can go to Wexford trainer Paul Nolan. He is represented by the 4yo filly Another Cliché and though she makes her hurdling debut here she has decent prospects of scoring if she can reproduce the form she showed when upsetting the ‘hot’ favourite and subsequent three time winner Our Girl Salley in a Limerick (soft/heavy) bumper in January. Though she failed to reach the frame in a good ground bumper at Punchestown three months later she was far from disgraced in taking fifth in a big field. With the stable if fair form and soft ground to suit she can make her hurdles bow a winning one here under useful 7lb claimer Martin Doran and in receipt of 12lbs in all from likely favourite House Rules she is taken to oblige here with former point winner Profit Margin taken to be her main danger having made a fair hurdles debut behind the exciting Zaidpour over 2m 4f a month ago.

The bumper now provides the closing race on the Cork card today and the vote goes to the once raced One Direction in this 2m bumper at 2-50. A son of Definite Article the 5yo is taken to build sufficiently on his reasonably promising eight placing in a Naas 2m maiden hurdle on soft to heavy over a month ago to beat some more fancied rivals here under the 5lb claiming Mikey Fogarty. Though he did start at fancy odds on that occasion he will be somewhat short on the boards here and he is taken to beat another once raced runner in Henry De Bromhaeds Byerley Bear who finished in mid field in a good ground Gowran bumper earlier this year. In a race where good cases could be made for several of the runners including point to pointers Well Regarded and Letter Of Credit and John Kielys improving mare Metro Star it is the latter who can provide the best alternative.

1-05 HUNTINGDON – 2m 4 1/2f mares novice chase

Nick Henderson can land this contest for the second time in 3 years with the relatively lightly raced 6yo TOPSHAM BELLE who can make a winning debut under Barry Geraghty. Winner of a bumper (here) and two hurdles up to 2m 6f on soft and worse ground the daughter of Presenting usually runs well fresh and she can justify favouritism here on her chasing debut at the expense of the former decent French 4yo Sway who finally opened her British account at Ludlow over a month ago over fences.

Horse Betting Tips: IRELAND’S EYE on Saturday

IrelandsEye_Logo_Small170Saturday 11 December

IRELAND’S EYE

What a finish to the apprentice riders title in Ireland last night as Joseph O’Brien rode a double to ensure a three way tie at the top with Garry Carroll and Ben Curtis and National Hunt purists were treated to some excellent action at Cheltenham where Midnight Chase put up a cracking effort to land the featured handicap chase in gutsy fashion under a hefty weight for trainer Niall Mulholland. Today the Cotswolds supply the days only jumps action with a top notch meeting on Day 2 of Cheltenham which features five Graded races highlighted by the transferred Tingle Creek and an open 2m 5f hc chase. We will stick with the jumps action today and we have high hopes of another successful day with a dual course winner in a Grade 2 hurdle while we will also be pinning our hopes on a five year old to beat a couple of highly promising youngsters (4yos) in another excellent Grade 2 hurdle later on the card.

The opening novice chase at Cheltenham provided us with a 1-2 with saver Reve De Sivola (3/1) edging out a somewhat luckless Wishfull Thinking (8/1) who was our nap while we also profited from the defeat of the short priced ‘jolly’ Spirit River (5/4) who extended our fine run of lays. Our only other selection on the jumps card was Regal Approach (8-7/1) who was not disgraced in taking a modest third in a hc chase. Meanwhile at Dundalk Anam Chara (9/4) finished runner up in the opener while we rounded off a fine day with a 7/1 winner when Try Freedom finally ‘broke his duck’ in a handicap for the Peter Casey yard.

With plenty of question marks about the main protagonists in the Grade 2 hurdle over the extended 2m 4f distance at Cheltenham today at 1-20 it may prove profitable to eke out profit on the DAQ with a couple of longer priced runners. The one that gets our vote is the Dickin trained Restless Harry who has recorded two of his three career victories over flights here, including over CD and his only other effort saw him exit at the last when lying a close third (admittedly held) in the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett at the Festival in March over three miles where his jumping let him down. This Sir Harry Lewis 6yo has the benefit of a couple of runs already this season and though he could only finish third in a Chepstow Listed hc hurdle on the first of these behind one of todays rivals Any Given Day (rec 15lbs) he lost considerable ground at the start and he has since finished a fair third to the highly progressive Silviniaco Conti (runs in 3-05) over an inadequate two and a half miles at Ascot three weeks ago. A return to one of his favourite tracks could see the Henry Oliver ridden gelding beat some more exalted rivals which include Celestial Halo (returning from an abortive chase career), Zaynar (seems to be becoming tempermental) and Alan Kings Karabak (finding it hard to pass the lolly pop in front). The one for the saver could be the Nicky Henderson trained Sentry Duty who has scored over CD from former Champion Hurdle winner Katchit earlier this year and the 8yo has been performing reasonably well on the level of late. He boasts a decent record fresh and Andrew Tinklers mount could make an impact here in what is an open affair.

Phillip Hobbs has won two runnings of the Grade 2 hurdle at Cheltenham (3-05) over 2m 1f in the past eight years with two decent types in Detroit City and subsequent Champion Hurdle winner Rooster Booster and he could ‘repeat the dose’ with the progressive Menorah today. The former Tom Mullins bumper winner he has since bagged four hurdles for his current yard and this years Supreme Novice Hurdle winner has put himself firmly on the Champion Hurdle map with a fine performance to land the Grade 2 Greatwood hc hurdle over CD a month ago under top weight. In a race where the top 4 in the betting are only separated by a few pounds on official ratings the 5yo is taken to land this prize before going on to better things and in the process break Cue Cards unbeaten record. Colin Tizzards talented four year old has yet to be tested in two bumpers (including the Festival one in March) and he has also registered his second victory over flights here in a Grade 2 twenty nine days ago, coming home eight lengths clear of his field. In a fascinating contest Paul Nicholls unbeaten French import Silviniaco Conti enters calculations strongly as the four year old has been most impressive on his three hurdle starts and his dismissal of decent if somewhat suspects rivals in an Ascot 2m 4f Grade 2 last time was certainly eye catching.

11-40 CHELTENHAM – 2m 110yds hc chase

Backing bold front runners over this circuit is rarely the recipe for monetary success but we will make a rare exception here with FIENDISH FLAME who can make all here for the bang in form Donald McCain. The dual chase winner has proved highly consistent and the 6yo is taken to beat CD winner Oh Crick and top weight Woolcombe Folly.

12-45 CHELTENHAM – 3m 1f 110yds novice chase

Lightly raced TIME FOR RUPERT made an encouraging chasing debut here a month ago when scoring over 2m 4f and the form got a boost yesterday when Reve De Sivola won the opening novice and Paul Webbers 6yo can justify short priced favouritism here with the step up in trip guaranteed to suit the son of Flemensfirth.

Horse Betting Tips: IRELAND’S EYE on Friday

IrelandsEye_Logo_Small170Friday 10 December

IRELAND’S EYE

Today sees the return to jumps action following another 4 days absence with the first day of an excellent two days at Cheltenham with all of the big players in action. It is a ‘red letter’ day in Ireland as the flat season comes to a close and though the senior riders title is ‘done and dusted’ there is plenty of life in the apprentice title where Garry Carroll, Ben Curtis and Joseph O’Brien look set for an exciting days action on the Dundalk card with the first duo locked together and the latter just two adrift. In England Southwell (early start) and Wolverhampton later in the evening provides plenty of betting options for all weather punters. Cheltenham will provide the base for our betting strategy today and we will be taking on a couple of the warm orders in the opening novice chase and cross country race with a former point winner and a stable ‘second string’.

Though we had plenty of placed selections yesterday we did fail to hit the winners target however. Nothing To Hide (9/2-7/2) and Phase Shift (7-13/2) both ran well in defeat in a Kempton maiden while Chookie Hamilton (11/1) finished a fair third in a handicap later on that card. Meanwhile at Wolverhampton Sky Diamond (15/8-7/4) and Irie Ute (11/4-9/4) both filled the placings in the nursery while late on Loyalty (4-7/2 and trading at 1.6 on the DAQ) flattered before going under narrowly in a handicap.

The opening 2m 5f Class 2 novice chase at Cheltenham today (12-10) has gone to some useful sorts in the past and though the former Irish point winner Wishfull Thinking at first glance would not appeal as that type the Phillip Hobbs trained 7yo can spring a minor surprise here. An impressive winner of his point the son of Alflora did bag a hat trick of hurdles success in good fashion subsequently and he was still travelling well when stumbling and coming down two from home in the Coral cup behind todays rival Spirit River at Cheltenham in March on good ground. Though his chase career has not started in the best fashion (fell at first on debut) and he had luck on his side when collecting at Wincanton five weeks ago in a Grade 2 contest where he was left clear after the departure of Robinson Collonges three from home he will be better suited by going left handed here and as his main rival Spirit River came down on his debut he looks opposable on this occasion. Nick Williams Reve De Sivola could provide the main threat despite the fact that the 148 rated hurdler could have jumped with more aplomb when disappointing when finishing a modest fourth over CD a month ago.

On a night where most of the interest will be on the apprentices two of the protagonists Garry Carroll and Joseph O’Brien look to have decent prospects of getting the night off to a flyer in the opening 7f contest with Quinmaster and Anam Chara. Quinmaster who is a course winner here and was just touched off here over a furlong lesser trip lately comes out best on ratings whilst the durable mare Anam Chara makes her third course start in the space of five days however but Andrew Olivers 4yo just getting nailed late in a mile handicap here on Sunday. Both could be upstaged here however by dual course scorer Finicius (one over CD) who has the assistance of Johnny Murtagh and though Eoin Griffins charge comes here on the back on a modest effort in a Listed event five weeks ago he is taken to beat Anam Chara.

1-15 CHELTENHAM – 2m 5f conditional jockeys hc chase

Kim Bailey has started the season in good form and the former Gold Cup winning trainer can take this contest with the 7yo REGAL APPROACH – a 115 rated hurdler who is shaping to be a better chaser on the evidence of his two starts to date, culminating in a hard fought and narrow win over 2m 7f at Newbury last time. With his useful 8lb claimer Ed Cookson on board he is taken to beat the well handicapped Patman Du Charmil and Font.

8-30 DUNDALK – 1m 2 1/2f hc

Veteran trainer Peter Casey has yet to register a win with the 5yo TRY FREEDOM but he can put that record straight tonight as the Mull Of Kintyre gelding is taken to step up on his second placing over CD six days ago from a good draw off a similar mark to last time.

Horse Betting Tips: IRELAND’S EYE on Wednesday

IrelandsEye_Logo_Small170Wednesday 8 December

IRELAND’S EYE

Though we are still in the grip of the cold snap we are heartened to hear that Cheltenhams weekend cards look to have decent prospects for survival while today there are three AW fixtures in England and Ireland. Lingfield provides the early action while Dundalk and Kempton both kick in later in the day. The Irish fixture is where we are going in the pursuit of winners and whilst Joseph O’Brien looks to have a strong book of rides here we will be taking on the youngster in the finale with one of his main opponents for the apprentice title while Fran Berry and Eddie Lynam can land an open mile handicap earlier in the day.

Southwell had to abandon after three races yesterday on a day where we managed to land three from 3 courtesy of our savers. Love Delta (4/1) got the ball rolling when sluicing home in a Southwell handicap for Mark Johnston while Hawaafez (11/10-8/11) recorded a similarly snug victory in a Lingfield maiden. The hat trick was achieved over an hour and a half later when Kiss A Prince (3/1) bagged a Lingfield handicap for the Dean Ivory yard.

Five year old Dahindar boasts a 50% win record on the all weather at Dundalk (mainly) and the son of Invincible Spirit can extend that sequence by recording his fourth CD victory in the mile handicap at the Lough venue this evening at 4-00. He recorded his first win here over the minimum distance three years ago and though he took some time to build on that success after a break from action last year he did register two good handicap successes here over the trip in October before losing out by less than a length to one of todays rivals Banna Boirche over CD 12 days ago. Fran Berrys mount is now 4lbs better off at the weights and from a decent draw he can turn the tables on the Mick Halford trained runner here off a 2lb higher mark. The one who could pose the main danger to the selection is Tony Martins 3yo High Importance – a former Jeremy Noseda trained Brighton winner (7f) who showed promise on his debut for the Irish trainers yard when staying to take a close 3rd over further here before disappointing somewhat last time.

Reigning champion jockey and champion in elect Pat Smullen can tighten his grip on the title by landing a competitive 10 1/2f handicap at Dundalk today at 5-00 with the Paul Deegan trained Hawa Bali. The Royal Applause 3yo showed some ability on the grass in decent company on initial efforts last year over shorter trips but he has improved since upped in distance of late and he build on two solid efforts in Fairyhouse and Leopardstown handicaps at 9f and a mile and a half on contrasting grounds to run out a winner here over CD on his all weather debut with two of todays rivals Dan Noir and Capacity behind in third and seventh respectively. The first named must have decent prospects of turning the tables on 11lbs better terms for a three and a half length beating but Ger O’Learys charge does not boast a good win to runs record and though this is just his third start on the artificial surface he may just have to settle for the runner up money here.

Joseph O’Brien looks to have a couple of gilt edged winning prospects earlier on the Dundalk card and the youngster who has to make up leeway on his two rivals in the apprentice title race will be fancied to score with the Tony Martin trained Pires in the closing 10 1/2f race. However though the dual hurdle winning 6yo just comes out best on official ratings here the Generous gelding is hardly a win machine and indeed he has only scored once from 16 efforts on the flat (both grass and AW). His latest defeat at Wolverhampton in a 1m 4f handicap is a little disconcerting and he gives the impression that he would be suited by further than todays distance and he is taken on here by the Sabrina Harty trained Bravely Fought who boasts a decent win record on the level and the 5yo recorded his sole AW victory (from 6 starts) here almost three years ago over a mile (sported blinkers) and he should improve for his seasonal run at Leopardstown over six weeks ago. Winner over a similar trip at Cork (grass) earlier this year he can give Garry Carroll a big boost in his quest for the apprentice title here.

12-40 LINGFIELD – 7f claimer

Sir Lunchalott has started slowly on his last couple of starts here when taking third money but though the Moore runner has prospects here it may pay to side with the hat trick seeking MY LORD who can land his first victory at this venue on his debut here under 3ln claimer Kieran Fox.

ADVICE
